BK virus associated nephropathy has become increasingly recognized as the cause of renal dysfunction and loss of the transplanted kidney in transplant patients.¹ The BK virus is a human polyomavirus. Polyomaviruses are members of the Papovaviridae family, which are small, nonenveloped viruses with a closed, circular double DNA-stranded genome. Polyomaviruses are distinguished from papillomaviruses by a smaller virion size and a different genome size and organization. Polyomaviruses are ubiquitous in nature and can be isolated from a number of species. The human polyomaviruses were first isolated in 1971. They are named BK and JC after the initials of the patients in which they were first discovered. The BK virus was isolated from the urine of a renal transplant patient who developed ureteral stenosis postoperatively.

While you're certainly not required to understand how satellite TV works, the ability to explain how your favorite satellite shows end up in your living room can make you very interesting company at a cocktail party! What follows is a very basic rundown of how satellite TV operates:

Before satellite TV programming can reach 20 million+ subscribers' homes, it must first begin on the ground at a satellite uplink station. DIRECTV, Dish Network and VOOM all operate their own satellite uplink stations.

These stations play two roles: First, they receive programming from affiliated networks like ESPN, CNN, and HBO. Because video programming contains a very large amount of data (think of a huge file on your computer), the uplink stations must then compress the data so that it can be easily transmitted to a satellite. Once the programming has been sufficiently compressed, the station transmits the data to satellites orbiting high above the earth.

When the satellites receive a transmission, they relay it back down to earth, where it is received by the satellite dish mounted on your home. The dish then amplifies the strength of the signal, which has weakened during its journey back from space, and sends it to the satellite receiver on your TV, which decodes the signal and turns it back.

As mathematician, Newton invented integral calculus, and jointly with Leibnitz, differential calculus. He also calculated a formula for finding the velocity of sound in a gas which was later corrected by Laplace.

Newton made a huge impact on theoretical astronomy. He defined the laws of motion and universal gravitation which he used to predict precisely the motions of stars, and the planets around the sun. Using his discoveries in optics Newton constructed the first reflecting telescope.

Shooting lightning over the city is the easiest place if you want to take pictures like these. Setting up the camera from a second story window or a balcony of an apartment is a good start. I use a window clamp tripod in a car for safety. Since a group of us storm chasers got hit we have been really careful. DEAR TIM: Four of the six bulbs in the recessed lighting in our kitchen ceiling keep burning out. I just replaced one and it burned out in an hour. I am using 65 watt bulbs. DEAR CORY: The problem with the premature failure of the light bulbs has nothing to do with the wattage or the wiring. My first guess is that it can be traced to the person who has installed the light bulbs or previous owners of your home. I think they are twisting them into the socket too tightly.

The flickering of light bulbs in lamps and fixtures can also be caused by bulbs that have been installed too tightly into light fixtures.

At the base of light fixture sockets you will find a brass tab. This tab is bent at an angle when the fixtures are new and will spring back and forth if depressed slightly. Do not ever stick your finger in the socket to test this as you can get shocked if the power is on to the fixture.

What are some common uses of the MRI procedure?

MRI of the knee - side (lateral) view, showing distal or lowest part of femur, the patella (knee cap) and proximal (upper) tibia. The lateral meniscus is seen as a dark bow-tie like structure. The patellar tendon is also clearly seen at the front of the knee connecting the patella with the tibia.Because MRI can give such clear pictures of soft-tissue structures near and around bones, it is the most sensitive exam for spinal and joint problems. MRI is widely used to diagnose sports-related injuries, especially those affecting the knee, shoulder, hip, elbow and wrist. The images allow the physician to see even very small tears and injuries to ligaments and muscles.

In addition, MRI of the heart, aorta, coronary arteries and blood vessels is a fast, noninvasive tool for diagnosing coronary artery disease and heart problems. Physicians can examine the size and thickness of the chambers of the heart and determine the extent of damage caused by a heart attack or progressive heart disease.

Organs of the chest and abdomen—including the lungs, liver, kidney, spleen, pancreas and abdominal vessels—can also be examined in high detail with MRI, enabling the diagnosis and evaluation of tumors and functional disorders. MRI is growing in popularity as an alternative to traditional x-ray mammography in the early diagnosis of breast cancer. The average human adult skeleton has 206 bones joined to ligaments and tendons to form a protective and supportive framework for the attached muscles and the soft tissues which underlie it. The skeleton has two main parts: the axial skeleton and the appendicular skeleton.

The axial skeleton consists of the skull, the spine, the ribs and the sternum (breastbone) and includes 80 bones. The appendicular skeleton includes two limb girdles (the shoulders and pelvis) and their attached limb bones. This part of the skeletal system contains 126 bones, 64 in the shoulders and upper limbs and 62 in the pelvis and lower limbs. There are only minor differences between the skeletons of the male and the female: the men's bones tend to be larger and heavier than corresponding women's bones and the women's pelvic cavity is wider to accommodate childbirth.

The skeleton plays an important part in movement by providing a series of independently movable levers, which the muscles can pull to move different parts of the body. It also supports and protects the internal body organs.

The skeleton is not just a movable frame, however; it is an efficient factory which produces red blood cells from the bone marrow of certain bones and white cells from the marrow of other bones to destroy harmful bacteria. The bones are also a storehouse for minerals - calcium, for example - which can be supplied to other parts of the body. Babies are born with 270 soft bones - about 64 more than an adult; and many of these will fuse together by the age of twenty or twenty-five into the 206 hard, permanent bones.

The latest best-selling book in this mould (claimed on the author’s website to be one of the most widely read books of all time) is The Da Vinci Code, by Dan Brown. The film rights have already been sold to Sony Pictures and a top director has been engaged to produce the film in 2005.

To the casual reader, it is nothing more than good fiction—a murder mystery that pits the keepers of the Holy Grail against Opus Dei—the ‘keepers’ of the Catholic church. So why the outcry? Well, one reason is that the first page makes a bold statement that the novel is based on historical fact—‘all descriptions of artwork, architecture, documents and secret rituals in this novel are accurate’ [emphasis mine]. At least one critic agrees and says ‘his research is impeccable.’

Coconut is high in saturated fat; olives and avocados are high in monounsaturated fat and calories. Use these items sparingly to avoid getting too many calories from fat.

The mission of the Cambodia Land Mine Museum Relief Fund (CLMMRF) is to decrease land mine casualties and contribute to land mine survivor rehabilitation in Cambodia. The goal of the CLMMRF is to further develop the existing Land Mine Museum in the city of Siem Reap as an historical attraction to tourists while expanding its operations to provide for humanitarian relief. The Land Mine Museum was founded by Aki Ra, a Cambodian ex-child soldier who has helped to clear some six thousand mines and unexploded ordinance. Aki Ra and the Cambodia Land Mine Museum currently promote mine awareness and education to both tourists and the Cambodian people.

The new Cambodia Land Mine Museum, Prevention and Rehabilitation Center will continue to house exhibits of land mines and unexploded ordinance. The Center will employ land mine educational consultants and technicians contracted to travel to mined communities in an effort to teach farmers and school children land mine safety. In addition, the new facility will provide a small dormitory and a school for child survivors of land mine causalities.

This is a tutorial for Linux, a version of Unix that runs on ordinary personal computers. I created it for people who want to learn the basics of using Linux, and thereby Unix, without getting bogged down in too much detail or technobabble. (See Doctor Bob's bio to learn more about the author.)

To be sure, there are a lot of Linux websites, but you'll find this tutorial unique because the lessons are short and to the point. Oddly enough, most computer info seems to be written for people who already understand the topic. This site has been carefully crafted and edited so that both the novice and the more experienced computer user will get what they want -- the know-how to use Linux effectively.

The "tromboning" exercise has you hold a small object at arm's length, inhale, then move the object in to touch the tip of your nose. You then exhale, look at the object, and move it back out. "Tromboning exercises the focusing mechanism, improves control of the extraocular muscles and stimulates the flow of nutrients inside the eyes," according to the manual.

A fundamental premise of vision therapy is that refractive disorders such as myopia (nearsightedness) and hyperopia (farsightedness) have both hereditary and environmental causes, such as nearpoint stress from reading. Certain eye exercises are designed to relieve so-called spasm of accommodation, believed to be an environmentally induced disruption of the eye's focusing capacity. Other exercises are said to improve the eyes' coordination or to straighten misaligned eyes. It's important to note that while many people think of such eye exercises as vision therapy, most vision therapists do not wish to be associated with self-directed programs.

The See Clearly Method has you do 30 minutes of exercises a day to strengthen and enhance the flexibility of the muscles that govern the eye's focusing power and control its movements. Six of the activities are described as "new visual habits." One, for example, has you hold a finger up as you vary your focus back and forth from the finger to a distant object.

Approximately 13.7 billion years ago, the entirety of our universe was compressed into the confines of an atomic nucleus. Known as a singularity, this is the moment before creation when space and time did not exist. According to the prevailing cosmological models that explain our universe, an ineffable explosion, trillions of degrees in temperature on any measurement scale, that was infinitely dense, created not only fundamental subatomic particles and thus matter and energy but space and time itself. Cosmology theorists combined with the observations of their astronomy colleagues have been able to reconstruct the primordial chronology of events known as the big bang.

Quantum theory suggests that moments after the explosion at 10 -43 second, the four forces of nature; strong nuclear, weak nuclear, electromagnetic and gravity were combined as a single "super force"(Wald). Elementary particles known as quarks begin to bond in trios, forming photons, positrons and netrinos and were created along with their antiparticles. There are minuscule amounts of protons and neutrons at this stage; approximately 1 for every one billion photons, neutrinos or electrons (Maffei). The density of the Universe in its first moment of life is thought to have been 1094g/cm3 with the majority of this being radiation. For each billion pairs of these heavy particles (hadrons) that were created, one was spared annihilation due to particle-antiparticle collisions. The remaining particles constitute the majority of our universe today (Novikov).

How does the heart work?

In the normal adult, the heart pumps five liters of blood, which is recirculated continuously through the body. The blood moves from the heart into tubes called arteries, then into tiny tubes called capillaries and finally into the veins that lead back to the heart.

The entire cycle takes about 60 seconds, during which the blood brings nourishment and oxygen to all the body's cells in the tissues, organs, muscles and bones.

It's 756 feet long on each side, 450 high and is composed of 2,300,000 blocks of stone, each averaging 2 1/2 tons in weight. Despite the makers' limited surveying tools no side is more than 8 inches different in length than another, and the whole structure is perfectly oriented to the points of the compass. Until the 19th century it was the tallest building in the world and, at the age of 4,500 years, it is the only one of the famous "Seven Wonders of the Ancient World" that still stands. It is the Great Pyramid of Khufu, at Giza, Egypt.

Some of the earliest history of the Pyramid comes from a Greek traveler named Herodotus of Halicanassus. He visited Egypt around 450 BC and included a description of the Great Pyramid in a history book he wrote. Herodotus was told by his Egyptian guides that it took twenty-years for a force of 100,000 oppressed slaves to build the pyramid. Stones were lifted into position by the use of immense machines. The purpose of the structure, according to Herodotus's sources, was as a tomb for the Pharaoh Khufu (whom the Greeks referred to as Cheops).

Long before mankind had the ability to go into space, astronomers dreamed of placing a telescope above Earth's obscuring atmosphere. An observatory in space was proposed in 1923 by the German scientist Hermann Oberth, whose work inspired rocket pioneer Dr. Wernher von Braun's interest in space travel. Scientific instruments installed on early rockets, balloons, and satellites in the late 1940s through the early 1960s produced enough exciting scientific revelations to hint at how much remained to be discovered.

In 1962, just four years after NASA was established, a National Academy of Sciences study group recommended the development of a large space telescope as a long-range goal of the fledgling space program. The recommendation was repeated by similar groups in 1965 and 1969.

The first two successful NASA satellites designed for observing the stars were launched in 1968 and in 1972. These Orbiting Astronomical Observatories produced a wealth of information, and support for an even larger, more powerful optical space telescope grew. The approval of the Space Shuttle, with its capacity for manned delivery and servicing of large payloads, made the space telescope concept feasible. NASA selected a team of scientists in 1973 to establish the basic design of such a telescope and its instruments. An expanded group of 60 scientists from 38 institutions was formed to refine those recommendations in 1977. That same year Congress authorized funding for the project.

On the voyage of the Beagle (1831-1836) Darwin collected and described thousands of animals and plants. In South America he observed the adaptations of organisms to a variety of habitat from jungle to grassland to mountain habitats. In the temperate regions the species resembled more closely the species of the tropical regions of South America rather than the corresponding species of the temperate regions of Europe. For example, in the grasslands of Argentina there are no rabbits, however, there are rodents that resemble rabbits; these rodents are unrelated to European rabbits but are similar to other rodents in South America. Moreover, the fossils in South America are dissimilar to European fossils but have similarities with extant (i.e. currently living) plants and animals in South America.

Darwin was particularly intrigued by the finches on the islands of Galapagos which are located approximately 500 miles from the mainland of South America. These finches, although unique to these islands, were clearly related to mainland species. There were 14 different species or genera of Galapagos Finch and their bills were adapted for particular diets. Darwin amassed these and other data including observations on variability in domestic animals (for example, dogs) which had been brought about by generations of selective breeding.

In his Sand-Reckoner, Archimedes (d. 212 BCE), discusses how to express very large numbers. As an example he chooses the question as to how many grains of sand there are in the cosmos. And in order to make the problem more difficult, he chooses not the geocentric cosmos generally accepted at the time, but the heliocentric cosmos proposed by Aristarchus of Samos (ca. 310-230 BCE), which would have to be many times larger because of the lack of observable stellar parallax. OLDLIST is a database of ancient trees and their ages. Its purpose is to identify maximum ages that different species can attain such that exceptionally old age individuals may be recognized.

For a crossdated age, there should be no question of the age of the portion of the tree sampled, except in any portion of the ring series not confidently crossdated with either other trees at the same site or other sites in the area. Ring-counted ages are derived by simple ring counts and may contain errors in age due to missing or false rings, suppressed areas, or other tree-ring anomalies. IS THE MARTIAN SKY IS RED?

A NASA statement from two years ago - "It's very hard to get the color right on Mars, images." Utter non-sense! All the spacecraft sent to Mars over the past 30 years have color calibration charts in one form or another, and have even included the American Flag. They have been caught not consistently using the charts. Blue color squares on some of the images are found to be red. So who is tampering with the color and why?

Because it's psychological: since the early days of astronomy the planet has appeared red as viewed from earth in a telescope.

Viewed from the moon, our earth appears like a "big, blue marble" as one astronaut described it. Are rocks and dirt on earth BLUE because the sky is blue? Of course not. NASA conveniently forgets this "minor detail" and INSISTS that their images remain reddish - regardless of the negative impact good science. The book covers this in detail shows proof of color tampering.

Unusual Fireballs Brighten Night, Likely Meteor Shower

An unexpected invasion from outer space has reports streaming in from around the world of intense fireballs illuminating the night sky.

The streaks of light are often brighter than a full moon, causing some viewers to temporarily loose their night vision.

"I thought some wise guy was shining a spotlight at me," backyard astronomer Josh Bowers of New Germany, Pennsylvania, told the Science@NASA news Web site.

According to Reuters, fireball sightings in Germany have put UFO reports on the rise. The wire service notes that some professional astronomers say the phenomenon could be caused by debris from a falling satellite.

Summary - (Nov 4, 2005) The European Southern Observatory has released a beautiful high resolution image of Robert's Quartet; a group of 4 very different galaxies located about 160 million light-years from Earth. Its member galaxies are NGC 87, NGC 88, NGC 89 and NGC 92. Robert's Quartet is one of the best examples of a compact group of galaxies, which can contain anywhere from 4 to 8 galaxies, and interact with each other from time to time. One galaxy in the group, NGC 87, has large regions of furious star formation because of its interactions with its neighbours.

According to Jesus' parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10, a neighbor is one who shows mercy on the needy. A lawyer had asked Jesus, "Who is my neighbor?" (v.29). Jesus told him about an injured traveler who had been attacked by thieves, ignored by a priest and a Levite, and helped by a Samaritan. Then He asked, "Which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?" The lawyer answered correctly, "He who showed mercy on him" (vv.36-37).

Of course it was?people's brains are as different as their faces. In his lifetime many wondered if there was anything especially different in Einstein's. He insisted that on his death his brain be made available for research. When Einstein died in 1955, pathologist Thomas Harvey quickly preserved the brain and made samples and sections. He reported that he could see nothing unusual. The variations were within the range of normal human variations. There the matter rested until 1999. Inspecting samples that Harvey had carefully preserved, Sandra F. Witelson and colleagues discovered that Einstein's brain lacked a particular small wrinkle (the parietal operculum) that most people have.
